Common Questions?

Price

A $25 non-refundable deposit will reserve your turkey. The final price will be calculated at $6.50/lb. of the package weight, with the $25 deposit subtracted.

Example: A 15 lb. turkey at $6.50/lb. will have a total cost of $97.50. Subtract the $25 deposit, equals a balance of $72.50 that will be charged at pickup.

Sizes

In past years, we have tried to estimate sizes for our turkeys. Weather, feed, pasture, and insect populations can all affect the final weights for each bird.

This year, we have decided not to assign size categories. Customers will be able to choose their turkey size at pickup. We cannot reserve specific sizes, it will be first come, first served.

Cooking instructions

Truly pastured turkeys will be leaner than their confinement counterparts, therefore the meat will cook faster. Plan on 8-10 minutes per pound at 325°F. The turkey will be ready when a cooking thermometer reads 165°F.

Pickup Dates

Thanksgiving turkeys must be picked up at Honeysuckle Farm. We do not have the ability to deliver or ship Thanksgiving turkeys.

Fresh turkeys are only available for the week of Thanksgiving. All Thanksgiving turkeys are taken to the processor on the Monday before Thanksgiving Day.

Please pick up your fresh, pre-ordered turkey on Tuesday (Nov 26, 2024) or Wednesday (Nov 27, 2024) before Thanksgiving Day (Nov 28, 2024).

Any turkeys not picked up on those days will be placed in the freezer and may be picked up by appointment only. Any turkeys not picked up by December 5, 2024, will be considered abandoned and resold without a refund of deposit.

Feed Ingredients

While pastured turkeys are able to derive much of their diet from the bounty of nature, they require a balanced ration to supplement what may be lacking.

We procure that supplement from Bellflower Feed Mill in the form of a non-GMO corn and soybean meal ration, balanced with added vitamins and minerals to provide the turkeys the nutrients they need to thrive.

Honeysuckle Farm Turkeys

Our turkeys are able to experience life closer to that of their wild ancestors;

  • breathing fresh outside air
  • bathing in the warmth of natural sunshine
  • exercising natural behaviors such as scratching, pecking, and foraging for insects and leafy green plants

Our turkey's pasture-based diet is supplemented with non-GMO, locally milled feed.

Our Thanksgiving turkeys are only sold fresh; processed the Monday before Thanksgiving.

Pick your pre-ordered turkey up at Honeysuckle Farm on Tuesday or Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Non-pastured Turkeys

Thanksgiving turkeys available at supermarkets are raised in large confinement barns like the one pictured to the right.

Large food conglomerates use labels to mislead customers into thinking their products are something they are not. They use terms such as:

  • "Organic" if the animal has been fed certified organic feed. Organic does not indicate that the animal had access to pasture.

  • "Free-range" if it has access to the outside of a confined cage or barn, which could be as basic as an exterior concrete pad. This label does not confer that the animal had access to any type of pasture setting.

Confinement turkeys are slaughtered well in advance of Thanksgiving and either sold frozen or maintained at 26°F indefinitely to be allowed to be labeled as "fresh".

Pastured Turkey Recipe

October 15, 2022
We tried this recipe last year from Jill Winger of The Prairie Homestead and loved the results. It really enhances the natural flavors. Brine the turkey for 12-18 hours before roasting it for a moist, delicious holiday centerpiece!
